About the Icon of the Crucifixion
Here is depicted the central event of the Christian faith, and indeed of all history. Our Lord Jesus Christ is crucified for sinners in order bear their judgment and thus earn their forgiveness. He truly is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Shown here with Jesus is Mary His mother, along with three other women who support her in her mourning. One arm is raised towards Him in prayer and worship. On Jesus' immediate left is the Apostle John. Mary and John's presence in this icon calls to mind Jesus words, "Woman, behold your son. Behold your mother," thus showing Jesus' care for His mother and for the holy Church. The centurion is also depicted with his arm gesturing towards Jesus as he says, "Truly, this was the Son of God!" Jesus' eyes are closed. For His death was real. It was necessary to win the victory over death and the grave, which is depicted by a skull underneath the cross. Galatians 3:13 says, "Christ redeemed us from the curse, having become a curse for us [for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.']" |
